Growing up on a farm where fresh vegetables, fruit and dairy were just that – fresh, I had no thought of what I ate, or how much and for sure whether it was good for me. What vegetable contained which vitamin was never mentioned, and what we were consuming and its effect on the body has not thought of. We just ate our harvest, drank the milk from ole Betsy the cow, and grew up tall, strong and straight.

Even though we had a great start those first 18 years of life, did not mean we kept up our good eating habits, for soon came fast foods, packaged foods, processed foods where slowly the nutrients we took for granted years earlier, were drained from the food and we did not even notice.

Often our learning comes later in life when we are the ones affected by thinning bones, and osteoporosis that seems to come with the aging process. Maybe this article will get to someone in time to reverse the effects of poor calcium intake. There is help out there in Vitamin supplements, even though to eat fresh foods would be much better. May I also add, with all the inconsistent information on the web, it makes choosing a calcium supplement difficult – having to sort through all the information to know what is best for we who are ordinary people.

(1) Research analysis taken from a 30 year study, show AdvaCAL Calcium users reported impressive results with AdvaCal. Bone density increased 3.3% per year. Studies also show it has a better absorption rate.

(2) IntraCal™ is the exclusive formula designed around Dr. Hans Neiper’s groundbreaking research to fight joint discomfort! It also is very absorbable, and works efficiently to get the calcium into your bones.

(3) OsteoMatrix® has been clinically proven to provide a unique matrix of critical nutrients that go beyond calcium to build and maintain strong bones and teeth. The makers of OsteoMatrix claim the nutrients in their product help retain normal blood pressure plus other claims pertaining to women’s monthly cycle.

(4) More and more Doctors are checking for vitamin D deficiency. A few years ago, I had not read or heard much about what a deficiency in Vitamin D would do. Understanding it is essential for healthy bones, then a lack of Vitamin D could/can cause serious medical problems; which brings me to the next one.

(5) Caltrate® 600+D. Caltrate has been around for a long time, by several names and many forms. Adding, Vitamin D was a plus and important for the absorption of calcium from the stomach and for the functioning of calcium in the body. So don’t be afraid to pick up Calcium with Vitamin D added.

(6) Oscal is an interesting Calcium supplement. It makes the claim that “it is proven to reduce the risk of hip fractures”. Diabetics having to watch their sugar intake will be pleased to know Oscal D chewable are free of sugar.

(7) CalMax lets us know right off the cuff, that not all Calcium supplements were created equal. CalMax is in liquid form instead of capsule, which may be a draw back for some. The maker of this product claims the difference is in what your body takes versus receives.

(8) – Health food stores are a great place to look for Calcium supplements. As a rule there is at least one person in the establishment very knowledgeable concerning natural remedies. For instance: AlgaeCal. AlgaeCal Plus contains an organic, plant-sourced calcium form derived from a unique South American marine alga called Algas Calcareas™.

(9) Puritan’s Pride Absorbable Calcium 1200 mg with Vitamin D 1000 IU. Puritan’s Pride comes in a flavored liquid, as well as coated caplets, tablets and capsules.

(10.) For years now we have known about the benefits of TUMS – the anti-acid round “candy” type lozenge we lay on our tongue or even chew to dissolve. It is a great source of Calcium. According to Dr. Andrew Weil MD, the question was asked “I’ve been told I should not be taking Tums as a calcium supplement. Why not? To which he answered, “Tums provide calcium as calcium carbonate (chalk), which is not always easily absorbed by the body. I recommend using Calcium Citrate, a form that is better absorbed.”

So for a chewable Calcium supplement try Calcium Citrate. I would personally recommend you find one that does you better by increasing bone density, and stick with it. Trying something new can be expensive and it doesn’t always work for us as it does our friends.
